Tik Tok Trends That Are Not as Cute as We Want Them to be

If you are not living under a rock, you may know what the popularized video streaming app TikTok is. Tik Tok is such a fun and hilarious app that allows users to upload minute long videos about fashion, politics, humor, music, home decor trends, and anything else you could think of. Because the app is so enjoyable it has slowly become a nuisance in my life as I had chosen to spend my free time watching Tik Tok’s instead of Netflix or movies. I really do give props to those who have self control when using the app because you can very easily become wrapped up in the fast paced entertainment. 

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the app was the ability for creators to share their own fashion and decor taste. As videos became very popular, some gaining over thousands of views, certain trends became very popular among Tik Tok users. Scrolling through my FYP (For You Page) I began to see users recreating and replicating certain trends that could be argued to be unfashionable. 

I too have thought to myself, “Hm wait, that actually is sort of cool...Maybe I’ll do that”. We are all victims to falling for these trends that spread across our FYP, BUT! We must ask ourselves whether we like the actual item itself or just the festivity of being part of a trend. A huge trend that took over my FYP for a while was the tile table. Creators would take a dingy old table they had and then would tile in with white, teal, light pink, or pastel colors. Personally I liked this trend, but if overdone or not done the correct way it can look tacky and give your space a very cold and sterilized feeling. I also think it is a bit hard to fit this table in with your space if you do not have a 90’s or scandidanvian styled space. The reason why these trends are so attractive is because a lot of them are DIY projects. Personally, I love a good DIY project, but when it comes to money I have to be very conscious of what I am buying. I think that in a year we may see tile tables line goodwill stores across the US. This is a rule I usually like to go by. If I imagine something in a goodwill store in a year then it is not worth spending my time on. A tik tok trend we are already seeing lined up at Goodwill stores is the DIY resin products. 

Again, this trend is cute if you have the right space for it, but as a broke college student I can see how this style of table may look messy and out of place. I would suggest opting for something a bit warmer like a wood or glass table. This could be found on Facebook marketplace, goodwill, ikea, homegoods and estate sales.

Another tik tok trend that has completely taken over Generation Z is the infamous LED lights. As a college student I have used these lights improperly, but that is only because I am a COLLEGE STUDENT. Those who are not in college should not be using these lights improperly. These lights are supposed to be hidden underneath cabinets, desks, bathroom counters, and beds. They are not supposed to be pasted along the top of the ceiling. It is appropriate for a college dorm because that is a place that is supposed to be messy. It's a temporary home. I love LED lights, but not when they are used in the incorrect fashion. I would suggest that if you do not want to use LED lights then opt for a sunset lamp. It gives off beautiful light the same as LED lights would and can be incorporated with the space so it does not look messy. The photo above depicts exactly how LED lights should be utilized. When it is placed like so, it does indeed look inviting.

Tik Tok trends can be tricky because it is showcased as cool and “in”, but by following these trends it depelets the space of any personal creativity. A huge trend that I have not become a fan of is the Pinterest collage wall. The trend consists of users printing out various images off of the website service Pinterest and creating a collage of sorts. It is an easy way to fill up some wall space, but every Pinterest collage is essentially the same. At college I have seen dozens of dorm rooms and townhouses with these Pinterest collages plastered on the walls. For my house I went to goodwill, Marshalls, and Homegoods to buy more unique and creative items to fill up the greying walls of our townhouse. If that seems like too much work, I would suggest making your own Pinterest collage with photos you have taken yourself. By doing this, it makes the space more personalized and homey. Plus it is much more fun for friends and visitors to look at than just seeing the same recreated Pinterest images with palm trees and neon words that say “Girls Girls Girls” or “You Got This”.

There are plenty of more Tik Tok trends out there, but I will leave it at this for now! Be conscious consumers and really put thought into whether you really like these trends or not! Stay creative
