How to Incorporate Life into your Space
Hello everyone and welcome back to my mini-series. For today’s post we will be talking about how to incorporate “life” into your tiny space. By life I mean plants. Some may not realize it but having plants and life in your everyday space makes a huge difference. It is so important to have something living and breathing in your space other than yourself. Since pets can be a lot of work and are usually prohibited in most college dorm rooms, plants are good way to go.
Throughout my years at college, I have always had plants in my space. I don't have a particularly amazing green thumb, so I opt for more manageable plants like succulents. My favorite succulents are Dragon Fingers and Desert Roses. They are super easy to take care of and are relatively inexpensive. I bought mine from Trader Joes and Home Depot for a total of $12. Since then, I have been able to keep them alive and healthy for two years. I even was able to propagate a few leaves from my Desert Rose succulent. Another way to get inexpensive plants is learning how to propagate and grow your own plants. By going to Home Depot or any of these stores, you can snag a few leaves that have fallen off these plants. Take these leaves home, throw them in some water and voila! You have your own living and breathing plant.
Due to the limited amount of space these dorm rooms provide you, having one or two plants is plenty enough. Once you upgrade to a larger rooming situation, I would suggest sizing up and getting a larger potted plant. I owned a beautiful snake plant that I kept in my “living room” which in all reality was just a space with a couch and a tv. I painted the pot that it came in, with a bright orange paint. The dark green contrasting with the orange gave the room a nice pop of color. I even named my plant (which is also a cute idea to do for your plants) Lil Rudy so whenever we would talk about the plant, we would refer to it by Lil Rudy. Like “does Lil Rudy need any water?” or “should I move Lil Rudy?”. It was fun to give our plant a name.
Incorporating plants into your space will have a huge impact on the atheistic of your space and your mood. Having to care for something other than yourself can be rewarding. Coming from personal experience I can say whole heartily that having plants in your space is simply amazing.
